A packed programme of events and exhibitions is coming up at Maidstone Museum throughout June so why not plan a visit now.
There is still time to see the fascinating folk lore exhibition looking at Animal Guising and the Kentish Hooden Horse which is running until 17 Jun 2023. With one last chance to see the exhibition and hear from its creator James Frost during a curator’s tour on 17 June between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
Take a climb up the Observatory Tower on Sat 10 June between 10am and 2pm where the Victorian housekeeper will guide you up the stairs to the Observatory. Charges will apply and booking is essential, and as the steps in the historic building are steep, winding and narrow this is not accessible for those less able.
Cllr Claudine Russell, MBC Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Arts said: “Maidstone Museum is a wonderful gem, packed full of more than 600,000 artefacts and the borough’s rich history. The building itself is such a pleasure to visit, dating back to the 1560s, and is an important part of Maidstone’s heritage.
“I am proud to say it is owned and run by Maidstone Borough Council and is free to enter. One of our key aims is to offer a vibrant leisure and culture offer, which is enjoyed by residents and attractive to visitors, these events are an important part of that.”
Other events include demonstrations from Bronze Age Master Craftsman Neil Burridge on Sat 24 Jun between 10.30am to 3pm. Come and watch Neil cast bronze in the courtyard where he will be smelting and casting through the day to produce replicas of Bronze Age weaponry and tools. This is free event, no need to book.
‘Discovering a Bronze Age Hoard – Secret Stash’ exhibition runs until Sat 17 June where people can take a closer look at the Bronze Age Hoard discovered at Boughton Malherbe. The exhibition takes an in depth look at what makes it ‘treasure’, where it came from, what the pieces are and possible reasons for its burial. Free to enter.
