World Book Day 2021
This World Book Day we are celebrating the life-changing power of books! From the magical creations of Roald Dahl to the modern masterpieces of Malorie Blackman, books have provided a much-needed escape from the real world this past year.
General Manager of The Mall Wood Green, Sam, has been enjoying reading David Walliams' Code Name Bananas with her daughter, who has recorded a special video reading just for us.
So, if that’s got you in the mood for a story, order online from WH Smith where you can find a whole world of books to dive into.
Top Tip – Did you know that by turning on the subtitles while children are watching television, they become better readers without even realising? Research by the Turn On The Subtitles campaign found that in a year, children who watch around 11 hours of TV per week with the subtitles on read the equivalent of:
• all seven of the Harry Potter books
• AND all five of the Earthsea books
• PLUS the three books in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy
• PLUS all seven of the books in the Narnia saga
• PLUS all three of The Lord of the Rings books
World Book Day believe that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. At The Mall Wood Green, we support World Book Day in their mission to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, develop a life-long habit of reading. Here are a few more videos of The Mall staff reading with their kids. Enjoy!
