100 Years of The Royal British Legion - podcast 🎧

10th Nov - 31st Jan

As Armistice Day dawns, The Mall Luton is honouring the centenary of the Royal British Legion with a special podcast episode dedicated to the incredible work of the charity.

In this latest episode, host Sophie Sulehria meets Michael Lewis, a veteran who joined the Army Cadet Force at the age of 13, who is now the Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion in Bedfordshire. Michael served in the Parachute Regiment in Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq, and talks about his experience of active combat, loss of close comrades and becoming an amputee after an attack by the Taliban.

Michael was medically discharged at the age of 25. Re-entering civilian life was a challenging transition which eventually saw Michael turn his skills to promoting the Poppy Appeal throughout the year, joining the Royal British Legion in Bedfordshire and raising an incredible £500,000 for veterans in the county.

For 100 years, the Royal British Legion has been helping serving and ex-serving personnel and their families. From those who served in the First World War to the men and women of our Armed Forces today, the organisation work to ensure no-one suffers for having served others. As the achievements over the last 100 years are marked, the charity are moving forward to support the next generation.

Red poppies have been worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community since 1921. Today the Poppy remains as the symbol of Remembrance at the heart of the Poppy Appeal, and The Mall Luton take pride in welcoming poppy sellers to the centre each year, seeing in excess of £20,000 raised within the centre.

Michael’s story is incredible - he talks with courage and bravery. His service to our country and ongoing commitment to the Royal British Legion, especially in bringing their work to a younger audience, is inspirational. The Mall always seek to support those in our community who are disadvantaged, and are proud to be part of Remembrance commemorations each year.
