What's on - Shoppers take First Steps to climb Everest at The Mall
The Mall asked shoppers to climb Everest and raise money for Havering childrens charity First Step.
Between Wednesday 17th and the 24th October, a scale model of Everest was created in the central Atrium and shoppers are invited to contribute a pound and climb up to the top collecting a certificate, sticker and photograph of themselves. Additional money was raised by face painting and the sale of popcorn, novelty sweets, raffel tickets and donation buckets. In support of the Mall Cares week shoppers were able to learn about the First Step charity by watching a specially prepared video about the work they do with local children and speaking with volenteers from the charity.
"We wanted to make giving fun for families chart the progress of our charity donations in an entertaining way," said Peter Callagher, Mall General Manager, "Lloyd Scott, the famous local fundraiser is a big supporter of First Step and agreed to launch the event by being the first to make the climb. Let's hope as many people as possible step forward and step up for First Step."
To mark the start of Mall cares week Lloyd Scott took the first steps up the mountain with his new hip. After a series of gruelling charity marathons Lloyd has spent a brief spell in hospital and this climb was his first very modest challenge since his operation.
"It's great to take this modest first step for the charity" says Lloyd, "Any effort on my part is tiny compared with the amazing work the First Step team undertake - and having climbed Everest myself for charity I am keen to encourage everyone else to follow suit. The climbing challenge may be less daunting in a shopping mall but the results will be just as amazing for the children at First Step."
