What's on - Music, fun and families at The Mela weekend
02 August, 2010
The first ever Mela @ The Mall took place last Saturday at The Mall Luton showcasing fantastic musicians, dancers and exciting fashion shows courtesy of Jean City.
Families, shoppers and groups of friends stopped to watch the event, which started at 12 noon and finished at 4pm in Central Square in the heart of the shopping centre.
The whole event was compared by Jeet from Channel 4's hit show 'The Family', and Indian stilt walkers amazed the crowds throughout the show as they towered overhead with fabulous costumes. The audience loved the rappers and songwriters, Bonafide, who performed for nearly an hour, and also Farez who wowed the crowd with his incredible Michael Jackson-style dancing talent. Home grown talent Clara Byrne was enormously popular with the Luton audience, as were MVE, Dholis and finally the incredible Taz from Stereo Nation.
The event in The Mall was the first day of the two day Luton Mela 2010, with the second day, Mela@ThePark, taking place on Sunday in Wardown Park. The festival pulled together the very best talent and creative energies from Asian culture and around the world, and brought it to the heart of Luton - promoting harmony through artistry.
Lavinia Holland, Marketing Manager of The Mall Luton commented, "Working with the Mela Committee has created a great partnership for The Mall, culminating in a fantastic event that was enjoyed by thousands of shoppers. Everyone had a great time on the day and it was terrific to see the vibrancy and diversity of the different cultures in Luton displayed in this way."
Jitty Marwaha of Luton Mela said "The twin treat of Luton Mela this year has had a fabulous response. Mela @ The Mall was positively received by all and we feel a great partnership between Luton Mela and The Mall has been forged. We are looking forward to working together in the future, bringing harmony through artistry to Luton"
