What's on - Tiger Leaps Into Luton

18 April, 2011

Tiger, the Danish variety store with a difference; offering quality, inexpensive homewares, toys, stationery, toiletries and accessories, opens at The Mall in Luton, on Friday 22nd of April 2011.

This unique retailer chooses not to shout about their prices, they simply let the customers do the talking for them; which they are doing very effectively, resulting in a rash of new store openings in London and the South East.

Tiger's mission is to provide customers with good quality, stylish products, in a relaxed, fun and pleasant atmosphere, and all at amazingly low prices. The enterprising Danish company believe in keeping their price points clean and simple, so everything in store carries a simple £1 - £20 ticket, with the majority of the merchandise lingering around the £2 and £3 price points. For instance primary coloured china pasta bowls £2 each, Zany reading specs in 20 plus colours and styles £3, twin packs of Scandinavian style paper napkins £1, contemporary greetings cards, 2 for £1.

Tiger, which started 15 years ago in stylish Copenhagen, now has over 80 stores across Denmark, Iceland, Lithuania, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and Sweden. Having created a mini retail revolution in Denmark, Tiger has quietly made its way to the UK, with 9 stores operating in Basingstoke, Croydon, Ealing, Hammersmith, Harrow, North Finchley, Stratford East London and Wandsworth and now, Luton.

UK Managing Director Philip Bier opened the first British store just 6 years ago, comments,
"Tiger is a true democratic store. We have professionals rubbing shoulders with young families and pensioners, not forgetting students fitting out their digs and children spending their pocket money. With pubs buying our candles, and Asian restaurants stocking up on our ranges of Oriental crockery we know the prices are spot on. Our lines are changing all the time, so customers always find their local branch exciting to visit. Tiger sells 90% own branded products designed and manufactured to our specifications. "

As well as putting a smile on the shopping public's face, Tiger is also providing valuable local employment in the London Boroughs and the South East. With a UK turnover of over £6m in 2010 and over 80 people on the payroll, the highly motivated employees are trained in all the Tiger retail functions, with real career opportunities to move swiftly up the management ladder.

Tiger is one of a number of new stores opening up in The Mall's development overlooking St George's Square. TK Maxx opened before Christmas last year and Costa have recently opened their latest coffee shop overlooking the square, with more restaurants set to open over the coming months.
