Grungy Glam

Its hard to believe that the 1990s are considered retro already - but the world of fashion moves fast. So, this season it's the turn of nineties grunge to enjoy a wardrobe revival. For those who don't remember the incense-scented style statement the first time round, it's kind of like Rock Chick meets Land Girl chic. A mix of retro floral tea-dresses, leather jackets and workwear boots. For the full retro experience, you could dig out your old Dr Martens and blast out the Nirvana tracks, while staring longingly at your Kurt Cobain posters. The 2010 take on the trend, however, is a little more sophisticated than that. It's all about grabbing elements of that original too-cool-to-care look, just without the teenage angst.

The staple of any grunge girl's wardrobe is the cute dress teamed with tough jacket look. We just love the lacey Dorothy Perkins dress and leather jacket combination (£65 and £49), or Marks & Spencer's slightly updated take on the trend (lace dress, £49.50). As for the dress itself, you could go try a figure-hugging maxi like the one above from Miss Selfridge or Internacionale's dip-dye version (£16.99) - so 1990s! Then, the key is the mix of that feminine frock with tougher masculine accessories. Grab a leather jacket like the one from Republic (£135), a grungy frayed jumper also from Republic, (£32.99), or a checked cape (Warehouse, £90). Alternatively, invest in a pair of grungy ripped stonewash jeans (£44.99) and a shaggy winter coat (£79.99), both from River Island. Finally, you've really got to give this look the boot. Monsoon's' calf-high boots are a versatile investment (£85), Jane Norman's ankle lace-ups hit the trend right on the head (£35), while Primark's worker boots bag the look for less at just £30.
