Shelly Woods Interview
We interviewed shelly to find out more about her sport and motivations.
Q. What is it that first attracted you to your sport?
I like the speed aspect of my sport and the fact that its really competitive. I love the feeling of racing in a pack of girls and everyone trying to out race each other. Its loads of fun.
Q. What has been your biggest achievement to date and what are your key objectives in the run up to getting to the Beijing Olympics?
Winning the London Marathon for the first time this year and also dipping under the 1500m and 5000m world records on the track this year.
In the run up to Beijing my objectives are to get faster and stronger and become a more solid athlete to give myself the best possibble chance of winning a medal in Beijing.
Q. How often do you train, and what does an average training day consist of for you?
I train 6 days a week. with one rest day. Sometimes twice a day.
Q. What does your sport require most to be successful? e.g. speed, strength, stamina, concentration, team work etc.
My sport requires Speed, Strength, Power, Endurance and a bit of technical stuff too. But Wheelchair Racing is pretty much all about speed. For me I have to make my weaknesses stronger and my strengths even stronger.
Q. What preparations do you make just before a competition? Any superstitions or routines you go through to be mentally prepared?
I make sure im well hydrated and have enough energy, and also that my equipment is in the best working order.
I dont really have any superstitions but the night before a big race I dont usually sleep too good.
Q. We'd like to encourage children in our communities to take up sport - do you have a top tip for aspiring champions, specific to your sport?
I think its important to find a good coach. Also 'Aim high and dont give up.' You'll have loads of fun!
