THE MALL URGES SHOPPERS TO TURN OVER A NEW LEAF AND PLEDGE TO ‘GO GREEN

-National Target Of One Million Pledges-

The Mall, the UK’s leading community shopping centre owner and operator, is calling on its shoppers and retailers to make a pledge and go green during EnviroMall week, 18th – 25th August, and hopes to achieve one million pledges from across its 23 shopping centres.

The Mall announced EnviroMall*, a partnership with leading environmental organisations (including the Carbon Trust, Envirowise, EEAS and Upstream) at last year’s British Council for Shopping Centres’ conference.  EnviroMall aims to combat climate change with a particular focus on the shopping centre industry and now The Mall is furthering its own ‘green initiatives’ with the launch of EnviroMall Week - seven days dedicated to activities and community involvement events in August.

EnviroMall Week’s goal is to raise awareness of easy, low or no-cost ways to combat climate change and encourage shoppers to promise to make small changes to their lifestyle and have a positive effect on the environment.  Indeed, The Mall is practicing what it preaches, and has already reduced its carbon emissions by over 2900 tonnes since 1999 (a decrease of 24% so far), saving 6.2million kwhrs of electricity and 4.4million kwhrs of gas - enough to supply 3 shopping malls for 6 years!

Almost half of the UK’s carbon emissions come from the energy we use everyday, at home and when we travel, so one small change can make a big difference.  The theme for the week, ‘It’s Our Turn’ will see The Mall reach out to children, shoppers, retailers, employees and the wider local community and call on them to do their bit towards improving their environment.

By turning off one mobile phone charger in every household in the UK that is left on standby, we could save the same amount of energy as provides the electricity needs of 66,000 homes for one year and turning your tap off whilst brushing your teeth could save 14 litres of water, the equivalent of 42 cans of fizzy drink!

Ken Ford, Chief Executive of The Mall, comments:
“We want to encourage our customers to pledge to make a small lifestyle change, with an aim to achieve one million pledges across our 23 Malls nationwide.  Every Mall will have a ‘Pledge Tree’ which enable visitors to the Mall to 'Turn Over A New Leaf' and make a pledge at any ‘Ask me’ point in the Mall.

“We can all easily reduce our everyday emissions by making just one change, such as switching off lights when you leave a room, only boiling the water you need for a cup of tea and turning your thermostat down by one degree.  EnviroMall week will run from 18th to 25th August 2007 and whatever your pledge, it will help to make an impact, so please come down to The Mall, make a pledge and join in the activities and events that will make ‘being green’ fun!”

EnviroMall* EnviroMall is the first national environmental accreditation scheme specifically designed for shopping centres.  It aims to minimise shopping centres' impact on the environment through working with retailers and shoppers.  The scheme provides an assessment regime which measures environmental impact and continual improvement over time.

The partnership is made up of Envirowise, Upstream, The Mall, the Carbon Trust and the Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme.  Each organisation brings knowledge and skills in their areas of expertise, which will be pooled to devise the shopping centre specific accreditation.
