1000 FACES OF THE MALL
A Unique Community Art Project Celebrating The Diversity Of Today’s Britain The Mall, the UK’s leading community shopping centre owner and operator, is undertaking a unique art project capturing 1000 images of its shoppers and local community heroes from across the UK. The idea was born from ‘The 1000 faces of E17’, a photographic celebration of the cultural diversity that exists in today’s Britain and in particular Walthamstow, East London, where the original project took place.
Hal Satterthwaite, the artist behind the original 1000 Faces, was asked to join forces with The Mall by Chief Executive, Ken Ford, to re-create the project on a national scale visiting 23 shopping centres across the UK capturing a snapshot of each local community.
The chosen faces will be a creative representation of the communities that live around each Mall, whilst recognising and celebrating the value that each individual contributes in shaping their local society.
During an 11 week tour of The Mall’s 23 shopping centres that stretch from Aberdeen to Southampton and Norwich to Bristol, Hal will take some 34,500 shots these images will then be joined together to form a extraordinary work of art which will be exhibited in all the Malls.
Ken Ford, Chief Executive of The Mall comments: “This initiative is about celebrating the people within our local communities. Our shopping centres form the hub of their neighbourhoods and provide us with a unique opportunity to observe, enrich and become an integral part of the communities that we serve; we are using the 1000 Faces of The Mall to display this in a unique and innovative way.”
Hal Satterthwaite, comments: “It is a really exciting project to be asked to produce 1000 images that will be representative of so many different communities across Great Britain. The challenge is to find that special something in each person and effectively convey that in my photography. Once it’s completed it will be quite unlike any other piece of art and will be a unique celebration of the people at the heart of today’s Britain.”
